QUESTION ASKED IN HOUSE AMENDMENT SOUGHT TQ CRIMINAL LAW (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, July 23. Reference to a recent charge in the > Magistrate’s Court in Christchurq).against a watersider was made in ttye House of Representatives this afternoon when Mr J. K. McAlpine (Opposition, Selwyn) asked the Minister pf Justice (Mr H- G. R. Mason) to tafce steps to amend the existing criminal laws so as to mqke it possible successfully to prosecute any person who wilfully broaches cargo in a ship's hold. In a note to the question, Mr McAlpine said that at Lyttelton recently a detective, hidden behind a case containing pyjamas, apprehended a mas who opened three cases of goods and in each case asked if anyone wanteq any of the contents. On his receiving | reply to the effect that the goods were not those required, the cases were closed. Subsequently the Magistrate was unable to convict a man for wni| was obviously an intended theft.
