THOUSAND PENS STOLEN
WATERFRONT THEFT AT AUCKLAND
CONSIGNMENT WORTH £4OOO
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 23. A consignment of 1600 Biro ballpointed fountain pens, each, valued at £4, was stolen by waterfront thieves from the cargo of the British steamer Kent at Auckland last month. The pens were imported from England by George Jeffery and Company, of Cystoiphouse quay, Wellington, and the robbery .was not discovered until the ship was discharging cargo at that port. More than half hsve been recovered after painstaking inquiries by wharf detectives in Auckland. The pens were spirited off Queen’s wharf, where the Kent was berthed from June 9 to June 20. Those responsible for the theft have distributed them to buyers throughout the city.
