THE FIVE-DAY WEEK
Sir, —The harm the five-day week is doing the hospitals is small compared with the harm it is doing to family life. As no help can be got at least three or four times a week the little children who cannot be left alone in the house are sent to the pictures and put themselves to bed. High wages and plenty of leisure sounds good; regular hard work breeds a sturdier character. “Eat, drink, and be merry.” Yes, now and then; but not from week-end to week-end, as the five-day week is doing. It was impossible to foresee what harm it has brought about. — Yours, etc., F. PRATT. Sumner, July 21, 1947.
