WOOL LEFT BEHIND

“ BRIDGE SPACE ” ON PAKEHA NOT FILLED The Shaw Savill and Albion steamer Pakeha sailed from Lyttelton yesterday morning for London and Liverpool without having completed loading. The vessel was to have taken in approximately 1200 bales of wool in what is known as the “bridge space,” the space on the poop deck under the bridge. When carpenters were engaged last week to fit this space for the carriage of the wool they demanded 6d an hour extra payment for working in what they claimed was a confined space. The head room of the space varied from Bft to 7ft 6in. The company declined to pay the extra money and the ship sailed without the wool.
