LIFE SENTENCE FOR N.Z. SAPPER

MURDER OF JAPANESE NATIONAL (Rec. 11,30 p.m.) TOKYO, July 22. Found guilty by a general courtmartial of murdering a Japanese national, Sapper S. L. Keystone, aged 22, of the New Zealand workshops, was sentenced to death. The sentence was later commuted to penal servitude for life. Keystone killed the Japanese at Yamaguchi with a sub-machine-gun. Twenty-three witnesses were called at the trial, which was presided over by a New Zealander, LieutenantColonel G. M. McCaskill, of Palmerston North, commanding officer of the 22nd New Zealand Battalion.
