DUTCH COMMANDER’S ASSURANCE
BATAVIA, July 21. In what he called “a heart-to-heart talk with the relatives of the Netherlands forces at this decisive hour,” the Dutch Commander-in-Chief (Lieuten-ant-General Spoor) promised that he did not intend to be reckless with the 100,000 lives entrusted to him. “No battle is without sacrifice, bqt also there will be no battle with one unnecessary victim,” he said. “I say this to the mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and dear ones of my soldiers and to the millions on the other side of the demarcation line who are waiting to be delivered from fear and oppression.”
