“STOP STRAFING”

BRITISH OFFICER’S BROADCAST

(Rec. 10 p.m.) BATAVIA, July 22. An appeal to the sense of justice of the Dutch “to stop strafing defenceless people from the air’’ was made by a British officer, LieutenantColonel Peter Ratcliffe, in a radio broadcast from Jogjakarta. LieutenantColonel Ratcliffe is visiting the Indonesian Republic on demobilisation leave from Singapore. In a half-hour broadcast he denied reports that the Republicans had fighter opposition to the Dutch planes and declared to the world that there was no disorder in the Indonesian Republic. The Dutch had said, LieutenantColonel Ratcliffe continued, that they were using military force to restore law and order. All he had seen on his tour of Java had been happy, peaceful, hospitable people.
