ROUND-UP IN BATAVIA

STREETS COMBED BY TROOPS

(Rec. 10 p.m.) BATAVIA, July 21. The round-up of suspected Indonesians in Batavia continues. Scores of Dutch motor-cycle police, truckloads of soldiers and some armoured vehicles are dashing through the streets to directions given through dozens of walkie-talkie wireless sets from the central headquarters for the round-up. . ._ The Republican Vice-Premier (Dr. Gani) and the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs (Mr Tamzil), who made the Republicans’ last frantic efforts to secure international intervention to avert war, are now understood to be under house arrest in Sutan Sjahrir’s former Batavia residence. Dr. Ali Budiardjo, former secretarygeneral of the Indonesian negotiating delegation, is detained in the Foreign Affairs Department. The other detained persons are mainly Republican officials in Batavia. The telephone exchange still refuses to connect subscribers with callers other than those authorised by the P°l ice - „ Business is at a standstill in Batavia to-day. The black market value of the Republican rupiah has fallen almost to nothing. The Netherlands East Indies guilder has also taken a steep fall.

(Rec. 10.30 p.m.) THE HAGUE, July 21. The Dutch public took the news of the renewal of war activity in Indonesia quietly. The Communists had previously called an anti-Government strike for to-day, and the Government hinted that troops might be called out if antiwar strikes seriously affected industry.
