BRITISH TOBACCO INDUSTRY
WORKERS’ CALL FOR NATIONALISATION
(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, July 2. The British Tobacco Workers’ Union has called for the nationalisation of the industry and a Government inquiry into the trade. Union delegates, commenting on the cuts in tobacco imports • announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Dr Dalton) said there was enough Empire tobacco available to maintain employment without increasing dollar expenditure. One thousand union members are already working short-time. The Imperial Tobacco Company announced that quotas of certain brands would be reduced because of the uncertainty of supplies of leaf tobacco.
