BETTER PROGRESS PREDICTED MR CLAYTON DISCUSSES PROSPECTS (Rec. 7 p.m.) GENEVA, July 2. The United States Assistant-Secre-tary of State for Economic Affairs (Mr William Clayton), speaking at a press conference on the tariff negotiations at the International Trade Conference, said: “The tariff negotiations have been slowed down by the Wool Bill. Now that (hat it is out of the way I think more progress will be made.” Asked if there was any hope that agreement would be reached on the United States-Australian deadlock, Mr Clayton replied: "Yes. While there’s life there’s hope. The tariff negotiations with Australia should reopen very soon.” Mr Clayton would not comment on the prospects of a reduetion in the American wool tariff. He said he was satisfied with the progress made by the conference on the charter, of which three important chapters had been substantially completed.
