TAXATION
Sir, —W.e were talking of taxation. It was suggested that with the multiplicity of taxation we have it should be obvious that many or indeed most of the forms could not be in conformity with justice. The petrol tax was suggested as one which would perhaps conform nearly to these needs. The people’s roads were used and taxed in proportion. How about taking this principle over the fence and applying it to the whole of a country’s land? That is, private persons using any part of the realm to the exclusion of the rest of the community should pay tribute in proportion to the value of the land they used. This payment, or rent, would naturally be in conformity with justice, as it would be a return to the community of value created by them. Other rubbishy forms of taxation would be eliminated and the people left with their true earnings.—Yours, etc., TRESPASSER. July 2, 1947.
