FINAL GALLOPS AT TRENTHAM

HOWE AND RAMICOURT WORK WELL “ The Press ” Special Service WELLINGTON, July 3. Pleasing performances by the Whyte Handicap candidates Ramicourt, Howe* and Hot Pursuit, over seven, six, and three furlongs respectively, were features of the final trials at Trentham this morning for the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting on' Saturday. Others which worked well were ■ Stony Broke. Honora, Po Marama, Fox-1 chase, St. Nattar, Brockie, Alamode, and Joygiver. The only schooling of any merit was a bout by Red Glare. Ellerton Hall, Abdicate, and Lanoma. The track dried out considerably on Wednesday, and although there were a few light showers that night, the outside of the course proper provided improved going for galloping, though it was cutting out. Travelling well within himself, Po Marama (N. Vaughan) was three lengths clear of Ratatu (T. Biggs) at the conclusion of six furlongs in Imin 21sec, the last half-mile in 54 l-ssec. Po Marama shows the benefit of recent racing. Blue Moon (N. B. Holland) required Imin 22 4-ssec for the same journey, the last half-mile being run in 54 l-ssec.

Magnus Lux (N. Cavaney) was doing better than Vassilikos (K. Wood) at the end of five furlongs, the final four occupying 53 4-ssec. Ridden by his trainer. B. H. Morris, Ramicourt was four lengths ahead of Palissy (K. Ford), who was 10 lengths in front of Hulabaloo (W. J. Mudford), after running seven furlongs in Imin 33 4-ssec, the last half-mile in 51 4-ssec. It was an impressive effort, as Ramicourt had the worst of the weights. He has been working well, but so far has failed to reproduce his good form of last season. Hulabaloo jumped away behind his companions and failed to make any impression. Stony Broke (W. Doyle) pleased by the way he ran three furlongs in 37sec. He is very fit and will have to be respected in the Stewards’ Handicap in spite of his weight. Howe’s Six Furlongs Partnered by Psalm (S. Waddell), Howe completed six furlongs in Imin 20 2-ssec, the last five in Imin 6sec, and the last four in 52 3-ssec. Howe led to the final half-furlong. Psalm, kicked up. gathered him in to finish on terms. Howe was travelling very easily and could have done better.

Not asked to do his best. Beau le Havre (K. Ford) required Imin 23sec to run six furlongs. He ran the last half-mile in 52 3- and the last three furlongs in 38 4- He will be all the better with a race. *

Honora (W. Doyle) galloped freely over three furlongs in 37sec. She has done well since being at Trentham, and is likely to race prominently. Over the same distance, Mr Pym (W. J. Mudford) was not doing his best to record 40 2-ssec. The southerner, Foxchase (A. E. Didham) was doing better than Blue Tie (K. Ford) at the end of half a mile in 52 4-ssec. Foxchase revelled in the going and finished on solidly. Covering much extra ground, Neville (N. Eales) returned 38 l-ssec for three furlongs. He is very fit and should race well in the Woburn Hack Handicap. The best halfmile of the morning was recorded by Brockie (A. N. Didham) and Gold Watch (N. Vaughan), which finished on terms in 51 l-ssec. Brockie appeared to have more in reserve than his companion. Copper Coin (L. Hare) was of no use to Bobby Dazzler (A. C. Messervy) over an easy half-mile in 55sec. Bobby Dazzler has had eight starts this season for one win. He is engaged in the Woburn Hack Handicap on the first day. Finishing full of running, Hot Pursuit (W. Doyle) ran three furlongs in 36 4-ssec. Hot Pursuit has worked impressively since being at Trentham. Lord Theio (K. Ford) and Longsword (A. G. Waddell) finished together at the end of half a mile in 52 3-ssec.

Gay John (A. E. Didham) again pleased when he finished well clear of Malanui (W. Lockyer) at the conclusion of four furlongs in 52 l-ssec. Malanui was very lame when he pulled up. Gay John has not raced since he won the Himitangi Hack Handicap at the Foxton meeting, but has been working well. Welcome Guest (W. Doyle) was never travelling ct top to record 42 3-ssec for three furlongs. Under a strong hold. Alamode (L. Hare) and Joygiver (J. Dooley) were together at the end of seven furlongs in Imin •39sec, the last half-mile in 54sec, and the final three furlongs in 40 4-ssec. Both impressed by the manner in which they handled the going. Hard held, St. Nattar (J. Dooley) was a length ahead of Lorna Leigh (L. Hare) at the conclusion of half a mile in 53 4-5 sec. St. Nattar has a good reputation in the south, and was beaten a neck by Loma Leigh in the Empire Handicap on the final day of the Dunedin meeting. Lorna Leigh has been receiving treatment for leg trouble since she has been at Trentham. A Good Trial Desert Trek (L. J. Clutterbuck) and Runaway (N. Crombie) ran an easy seven furlongs, coming home the last half-mile in 57 3-ssec. Corineus (R. Collett) shaded Town Echo (F. Cleaver) and Hippodrome (D. McKinnon), with a gap to Selected (N. McKinnon), and another gap to Big Money <K. Wood), after running a mile in Imin 47 2-ssec. the final half in 53 2-ssec. It was a good trial. Even Light (K. Ford) completed three furlongs smoothly in 39sec. He has gone on the right way since winning the Awa-. tapu Hack Handicap on the final day of the Manawatu meeting.

Bright Fox (R. Collett) led early over a mile from Amorlad (A. E. Didham), Town Survey (J. Winder), Arabian Night (R. Gibson), and Royal Writ (R. Heasley), but Amorlad drew up to finish on terms with him in Imin 51 4-ssec. Town Survey, Arabian Night, and Royal Writ finished in that order, several lengths away. The last half-mile required 56 4-5 sec. Pensacola (K. Ford), looking fit, did an easy seven furlongs on the two-year-old track, coming home from the three furlongs in 42sec. Horses restricted to pace work included Fortune’s Smile, Flying Gold, Findon, Neenah, Lalla Meer, and Gulf Stream. Red Glare (A. G. Waddell), Ellerton Hall (M. Andrews), Abdicate (A. E. Lord), and Lanoma (F. Cleaver), were associated in a bout over the steeplechase fences. Starting at the sod wall, they raced in close order, taking the two board fences, the brush, and the board fence at the top of the straight. All gave a polished display. Red Glare continued alone and took the same fences again, 10 in all. Ruling Moment (K. Thompson) gave a fair display over five fences. Master Play (W. Barr) accompanied him over three and was then pulled up. Paganini (M. Andrews) /jumped 10 schooling hurdles on the inside of the course -satisfactorily. Corineus (R. Collett) gave a better display than Town Echo (F. Cleaver) over two of the same fences. Selected (W. E. Carter) took the same obstacles in his stride. Bay Robe (J. Chaplin) and Master Ring (W. E. Carter) set out to jump four hurdles on the course proper. No wings were attached to the hurdles, and both tried to run off at the first. Bay Robe succeeded in doing so at the second, where Master Ring screwed badly and lost his rider Master Ring was later schooled over the same fences. He screwed at the first, but jumped the remainder well at a slower pace. Bay Robe was tried over four schooling hurdles and gave a fair display.
