HIGH-COUNTRY FARMS
GOVERNMENT URGED TO GIVE ASSISTANCE (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, July 3. “This is not merely a problem of national importance: it is a national emergency,” said Mr T. D. Shand (Opposition, Marlborough), in his maiden address in the House of Representatives to-night when he urged the Government to consider measures for improving in present position of hill-country farming. Properties were heavily eroded and suffering from noxious weeds, he said. These were symptoms, not causes, it was impossible under present economic conditions to farm such properties and the problem must be tackled immediately. Thousands of acres were reaching the stage from which they could never be brought back to production.
