BRITISH WOOLLEN GOODS
FREEZING OF EXPORTS REPORTED
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 3. Advice that his next quarterly allocation of woollen goods would not be forthcoming as the result of the British Government’s freezing of all exports of woollen goods from Britain to countries outside the hard currency area has been received by a Wellington merchant from a large manufacturing firm in the Midlands No information about the duration of freezing of exports was contained in the cablegram.
If the message was accurate, and he had no reason to believe that it was not, all Britain’s wool exports for the next quarter, at least, would be going to the United States and countries in the dollar bloc, said the merchant.
He said that at the moment his was rhe only firm in Wellington which had received such advice. The Collector of Customs had yet received no information about the stopping of exports of British woollens. He was cabling other manufacturing firms in Britain to try to get further information about his consignments from them.
Another merchant in Wellington said mat while he had heard nothing of the freezing of exports, it was more than likely, in his opinion, that the effects of such a stoppage would not be immediately felt in New Zealand. There were consignments of materials on the water which would carry his firms ‘hrough for a period. There were large
consignments of suitings and other woollen materials in the warehouses in Britain at present awaiting shipment to New Zealand. It remained to be seen whether these materials would be affected.
