WINTRY WEATHER ON COAST
OTIRA GORGE ROUTE BLOCKED BY SNOW From Our Own Reporter GREYMOUTH. June 18. Heavy rain and hail fell to-day at Greymouth after an electrical storm during the night. There was a heavy fall of snow in the alpine regions, and though there was only a light fall of snow early this morning, a heavy fall occurred to-day, blocking the Otira Gorge route completely to traffic. Motorists have been advised that the route is impassable, and that they should rail cars between Otira and Springfield, as it is snowing from Otira to Castle Hill on the Canterbury side, and the snow is a foot deep in some places. The Lewis Pass is also impassable to traffic other than heavy motor vehicles, and snow is reported to be freezing on that route behind graders which are attempting to clear the road. This is the first real snowfall this winter.
