BIGGER FEDERAL PARLIAMENT
PRINCIPLE APPROVED BY CAUCUS CABINET TO CONSIDER DETAILS . (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, May 8. The Parliamentary Labour caucus to-day unanimously endorsed a resolution approving the principle of enlarging the Federal Parliament. Details will now be considered by the Cabinet. Member* were left with the impression that Parliament would be increased to 48 senator* and 100 representatives, or 60 senators and 120 representatives. At present it consists of 36 senators and 74 representatives, plus members from the Northern Territory entitled to vote only on territorial matters. The resolution was originally moved In the caucus by Mr George Lawson, a former Minister, who asked for an increase by 25 per cent. The Attorney-General (Dr. ’H. y. Evatt) explained that according to the constitution, the Senate should be about half the size of the House of Representatives.
