EELS
Sir,—How lovely and inviting to gaze on the picture of eels depicted in “The Press” of yesterday. Against the picture remains the sad, disappointing fact that our favourite fish (eels) are not procurable here in Christchurch fish shops. I read in your paper that they are being sent to Picton for canning purposes, and then exported to other countries. The old saying that ‘‘charity begins at home” does not apply to our New Zealand Government evidently. As a food value, I read recently that eels were the highest of all fish in vitamins. Are we already in New Zealand too rich in the latter? We want the eels and don’t forget it—Yours, etc., JA$. hill. Belfast, May S, 1947.
