LIQUOR POLL AT MASTERTON
ISSUES FOR ELECTORS TO DECIDE LEAFLET ISSUED BY GOVERNMENT (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 6. A leaflet has been prepared by the Government setting out issues involved in the polls to be held in the Masterton no-licence district on May 28, after the adoption of liquor restoration at the General Election in November. It is now in the hands of the printer and will be distributed to households in the district. The Minister of Justice (Mr ‘H. G. R. Mason) explained this, evening that the leaflet would also give the reasons Why the polls were required and explain who were entitled to vote. The leaflet made it clear that the proposals on which electors would vote would be a trust or trusts, to be elected by direct vote of the people concerned, subject to a condition that if substantial sums were borrowed from the Government that would entitle the Government to be represented on the trust body while loan money was outstanding. The licensing trust in Invercargill is constituted largely by representatives of local bodies in the district and Government representatives.
For the purpose of polls to be taken on May 28, the Masterton nolicence district has been divided into three geographical areas—the Akitio area, the Eketahuna area, and the southern area, comprising the town of Masterton and adjacent localities. Voting in an individual area will be regarded separately from the voting in others.
