TOTALISATOR PERMITS
RANGIORA TROTTING CLUB A submission that totalisator licences for trotting meetings in Canterbury should be increased, and that licences should be granted to the Rangiora Trotting Club to use the totalisator at,( two trotting meetings a year, was made by Mr A. C. Fraser, on behalf of the club, yesterday, to the Royal Commission on Gaming and Racing. Mr Fraser said that the club had been formed last year, and was in a position to race immediately. It had •a membership of 114. The course at Rangiora owned by the North Canterbury Racing Club would be leased by the club. As the town was only 20 miles from Christchurch, and as it was the main town of a large farming area which had been one of the main districts for the breeding of light harness horses, it was confidently felt that trotting meetings could be held successfully, he continued. The nearest country trotting clubs were at Cheviot, 60 miles away, and at Methven, 80 miles away. He submitted that it was in the public interest that more licences should be granted for trotting meetings as the sport had attained tremendous popularity. Trotting meetings at Rangiora would also help owners and trainers who urgently needed additional facilities for racing young and slow class trotting horses. <
