REJECTION OF WAGE PROPOSALS
BRITAIN’S COAL BOARD CRITICISED (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, April 15. “The National Coal Board is attempting to develop a bureaucracy far more tragic and ridiculous than was the practice under private ownership,” said Mr J. A. Hall, president of the Yorkshire Mineworkers’ Union, attacking the board’s refusal to agree to wage proposals for transferred miners. Mr Hall said that, with a knowledge of conditions, he had made certain recommendations to the board and advised the men to continue working. In spite of this, the board had refused to implement its undertaking, creating a feeling of discontent and irritation among the workers.
“I prophesy the complete failure of the present boards, both national and divisional, if this sort of thing is going to continue,” said Mr Hall, who is one of the most influential of the miners’ leaders.
