DURATION OF CUTS

MANUFACTURERS’ REQUEST

EFFECT ON FACTORY WORK

The Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association intends to apply to the Christchurch Gas Company to find out the approximate length of time the cuts in the gas supply will be in force This decision was made by the council ■ of the association at its meeting last evening. It was also decided to find out how the cuts would affect members of the association. When the president (Mr B. J. Masters) asked how the cuts would affect members, Mr D. V. Wilson said that a number of factories which worked overtime used gas. “It is just a temporary inconvenience.” said Mr H. C. Urlwin, who added that the company had to renew its plant. The inconvenience suffered by his firm was slight, and it was happy to be inconvenienced to help another industrial concern. Mr A. M. Hollander said that all firms thait worked back on second shift or overtime would be a ’ected. There might be some members seriously affected. An inquiry should be made, and the gas company should be approaches to see if something could be done.

“The question is. do members think it fair for the gas company to tell us at 4 o’clock in the afternoon that gas will not be available at night?” asked Mr Masters. Members: No.

The council then agreed to Mr Masters’s suggestion that the association should apply to the gas company.
