PAMIR AS TRAINING SHIP

AUCKLAND HARBOUR BOARD SUPPORTS SUGGESTION (P.A.) AUCKLAND, April 16. Support for a suggestion from the Oamaru Harbour Board that the Government should use the former Finnish barque Pamir as a training ship was given by the Auckland Harbour Board, which will make this suggestion to the Minister of Marine. The Pamir was taken over by the Government as a prize of war in 1941, and she is at present bound from Sydney to Wellington with cement. The Oamaru Board’s letter stated that so far nothing had been decided about the future of the barque. New Zealand, as a maritime nation, would have a definite asset if the Pamir were used to train young men in the art of seamanship. “I think sailing-ship training is an excellent standby for seamen.” said the acting-harbourmaster (Captain H. Hogan), when asked for his opinion. “Incidents occur in steam when training in sail is of great benefit to the man and to others in his ship.”
