SAVING FOOD FOR BRITAIN

CHRISTCHURCH HEADS WEEKLY LIST

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 16. Christchurch is first city to head the weekly list of contributions to the New Zealand Famine Emergency Committee’s campaign to save more food for Britain. In the fifty-second week of the campaign Christchurch contributed a total of 1746 butter coupons and 57,878 meat coupons, an average of more than one coupon for each household, and four times as many as total gifts by the other three main centres.

Christchurch has throughout the campaign gained a high place on the weekly lists. Second place last week was gained by Palmerston North,which also contributed more than one coupon for each household. Gifts of coupons last week—3646 butter and 148,148 meat—were the highest this year. Total gifts for 52 weeks are 9,073.186 meat and 351,473 butter coupons, an average of 22 coupons for each household in the Dominion.

CONGRATULATIONS OFFERED

Last week, for the first time since the inception of the campaign, the Christchurch district headed the whole of New Zealand for the number of coupons surrendered per head of population. A telegram received by the secretary of the Christchurch Famine Emergency Committee (Mr E. A. Chivers) says: “You have made the grade this time. First place in the coupon returns. Congratulations on this reward for all your strenuous efforts.”

“We are sure.” said Mr Chivers yesterday, “that our pride and satisfaction will be shared by all those who have worked so hard in support of our campaign. It is to be hoped that, having at last achieved the leading position, every effort will be made to retain it.”

Interest in the schools competition is being maintained. Good returns have lately been received from Greta Valley (where, with a roll of only 12 pupils, over 7000 coupons have been collected), Little Akaloa (whose latest noster bore over 500 coupons), and Medbury Boys’ School (from which another poster with over 600 coupons has been received).

Collections of gift food are being conducted by various schools, including West Christchurch District High, Christchurch Girls’ High, and St. Margaret’s College. The food from these collections will be sent through the British Ministry of Food to schools m Britain.
