WAR AMPUTEES’ SOCIAL
WIVES AND FRIENDS ENTERTAINED
Members of the Canterbury-West-land War Amputees’ Association entertained their wives and friends last evening at what is believed to be the first social of its kind to be held by an amputees’ association in New Zealand. Reunions for the men have been held on many occasions in the past, but this was the first time that the association had organised a social for the wives and friends of its members.
There was an attendance of more than 90 members and visitors, some of whom came from Mid-Canterbury and North Canterbury. The president (Mr A. W Innes), who welcomed the guests, said that it was the first’ time the association had arranged such a gathering for the wives and friends of former servicemen of* both wars.
Mrs L. R. Barnett, a V.A.D. of the first World War, who is well-known to amputees in Canterbury, was the hostess for the association. Musical items were given by Miss N. Butcher (violin), Mrs P. Schumacher (piano accordeon), Messrs T. E. West, C. Stanley (songs), and M. Dixon (piano). A series of games and competitions were held, prizes being presented to the winners at the -end of the social.
