BOXING

HOFFMAN BEATS HONEY (P.A.) AUCKLAND. April 15. Two fine professional boxing contests held in the Town Hall gave the new Auckland boxing season an encouraging beginning.

In the first bout, Johnny Newman, an English merchant seaman, proved himself one of the most accomplished boxers seen in Auckland for many years in knocking out Phil Bennett, of Scotland, in the sixth round of an eight-round bout. The main contest between Darcy Hoffman, of Dunedin, and Colin Honey, of Auckland, was willing throughout and thoroughly, pleased the crowd before the referee awarded the decision to Hoffman on a technical knock-out shortly after the start of the eighth round.
