RECORD ENTRY OF TEAMS

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS

A record entry of 156 teams for all grades was reported at a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening. Nominations in the different grades were as follows: senior 12, senior reserve 11, second grade 14, third grade 23, fourth grade 12, fifth grade 5, under 18 years 14, under 17 years 9, under 16 years 7; under Bst 71b 8, under 7st 71b 11, under 6st 71b 16, under sst 71b 14. Mr V. L. Jensen presided.

Reporting on behalf of the competitions ; committee, Mr R. W. Blazey said it was a recommendation to the management committee that the senior competition oe brought to a close on August 30,. 11 games to be played in the first round, and nine in the second. In accordance with the recommendation of club delegates, the whole of the first found had been drawn. The competitions would be continued each Saturday, irrespective of representative games and postponements. The senior reserve and second grade competitions would also close on August 30, and most of the lower grades on August 23. Subject to conformation at a meeting of delegates in Wellington, it was decided to recommend the following dates for representative fixtures this season:—May 31, v. Buller, at Westport; June 2, v. West Coast, at Greymouth; June 21, Town v. Country; July 5, v. Wellington; July 16, North v. South Island Universities; July 19, Canterbury v. New Zealand Universities. The arrangement of dates for matches against Auckland, South Canterbury, and Otago, and return games against Buller and West Coast was held over. Messrs J. O. Hattersley and L. G. Loveridge were appointed selectors of the Canterbury representative team for the season. The Kaiapoi Club was granted permission to hold a seven-a-side tournament on King’s Birthday. It was decided to nominate Mr R. R. Masters as a selector for the New Zealand representative team, and that Mr J. O. Hattersley be nominated as a South Island selector. It was also decided to forward the name of Mr J. N. Clarke as manager or assistant-manager of the New Zealand team to tour Australia this season.

Messrs V. L. Jensen, W. C. Dailey, R. R. Masters, and W. E. Maxwell were appointed delegates to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union to be held in Wellington on April 24.
