STEAMER EXPRESS WHARF

Sir, —I was encouraged by a South Island gentleman in the North to visit the South Island and enjoyed my visit so much, particularly Christchurch, that I wish to express my appreciation. As a stranger to your country perhaps it is presumptuous for me to be critical, but it did strike me that the entrance to the island through the port is far from imposing. Perhaps I was unfortunate in striking the busy Easter period, but along with several hundred other passengers I became mixed up with motor-cars, mails, luggage, and even horses on the wharf; and I was not impressed. I might have been entering the backyard instead of the main gates. However, the beauty of your city fades the first unfavourable impression, and my visit to Christchurch will carry happy memories.—Yours, etc., VISITOR. Tauranga, April 13, 1947.
