PLUNKET SOCIETY SUB-BRANCH
SUCCESSFUL GARDEN PARTY A successful garden party was held yesterday by the Papanui-Merivale sub-branch of the Plunket Society in the grounds of “Elmwood,” which had been lent for the occasion by Sir R. Heaton Rhodes. About 400 persons attended the party, and the sum of £l2O was raised, with some outstanding amounts slill to come to hand. The money will be used for the general work of the sub-branch. It is 40 years since the sub-branch first held its annual garden party at “Elmwood,” and it will probably not be possible to hold it there again, owing to prospective alterations on the site, and the sale of the property. The mothers of the sub-branch’s district gave assistance at all stalls, and the produce stall, which was outstandingly well stocked, was run by mothers of the Styx and Harewood districts. Conveners of the various stalls were as follows:—produce, Mesdames G. B. Cumming and T. Winfield; variety, Mrs F. C. Wooler; cake, Mrs E. C. Tapley; cooked food, Mrs B. E. H. Whitcombe; tea, Mrs J. Ferrier; bran tub and children’s corner, Mrs C. Collins and Mrs V. Wilson; copper trail, Mrs L. Symes and Miss E. Symes; pony rides, Miss Susan Tapley. The organising committee comprised Mrs J. Ferrier (president), Mesdames L. M. Wilson, B. E. H. Whitcombe, G. Holder, L. A. Bennett, V. Mathews, C. Collins, F. C. Wooler, R. Jameson, H. S. Feast, H. MacDoqald. J. Huggins, C. Wilson, L. G. Amos, M. Mills, and H. Wyatt, and Miss M. C. Bain. The gatekeepers were Mrs Holder and Mrs Wyatt.
