CURRENT NOTES

• At a recent meeting of the executive of the North Canterbury Red Cross Centre, Mrs Herbert Smith was reappointed the Red Cross representative to the Metropolitan Patriotic Welfare Committee. A large number of former residents of Port Chalmers and surrounding districts met in St. Luke’s schoolroom recently for their monthly social. Dancing was held and musical and elocutionary items and dances were presented by the Cotton sisters and Messrs Gant, Curry, and J. Smith. Music for the dances was played by Mr Ray Head. During the evening the president extended a special welcome to Mr Ken McDonald, an engineer trained in Port Chalmers, who recently returned to New Zealand on the Hinemoa after having spent 14 years in England. Mrs M. E. Bruce, who has left Duafter having been a resident there for a number of years, was guest of honour recently at a social held in the Duvauchelle Hall. She was presented by Mrs J. Mould with a shoulder spray, and by Mr S. J. Cogan with a cheque, with the good wishes of the residents. Mrs Bruce is at present spending a holiday with her sister, Mrs G. Gibb, Mount Eden, Auckland. The year’s activities, reviewed in the annual report of the Hoon Hay SubCentre of the Red Cross Society, included knitting, sewing, providing cakes, and Christmas parcels for servicemen in hospitals, hospital visiting, and supplying flowers, and manning trre depot in the Square on several occasions far the collection of fat and tinned food for Britain. It was also reported at the annual meeting that in a “Food for Britain” campaign held by the subcentre about 200 tins of food had been given by members. During the year a grant of £2O had been made to CORSO, £3O for food for Britain, £8 to Red Cross headquarters, and £2 to International Red Cross. The election of officers resqlted as follows: —president, Mrs. A. L. Andrew; vicepresidents, Mesdames Brown and Smail; secretary, Mrs Sanders; treasurer, Mrs Simon; committee, Mesdames Stewart, Duffell, Bower, Henshall, Gill, Hood, and Vivian. At the annual general meeting of the Junior branch of the Christchurch Ladies’ Guild of the British Sailors’ Society, the following officers were elected:—president, Miss Flora McDonald; vice-presidents, Misses Gladys Stow, Judith Weston, and Jean Smellie; treasurer, Miss Rona McKenzie; secretary, Mrs P. Tutton; assistant-secretary. Miss Alison Graham; committee, Misses Jean Cowie. Betty Dennis, Barbara Clinton, Norah Stopp. Miriam Fyson, Louise Mansfield, Lola Bines, and Cula McLachlan.

In connexion with the Nursery Play Centre Association refresher course r.t present being held in Christchurch, a group of supervisors and others interested visited the Speech Therapy Clinic at the Normal School yesterday. Miss M. Saunders, head therapist, explained the work being done at the clinic, and different groups observed the children at work. The president of the association (Dr. Helen Field) later addressed the visitors on “Health of the Pre-School Child,” which, she said, meant the health of the growing child. Dr. Field said that it was possible for supervisors and others dealing with groups of young children to be able to improve the health of the community by drawing attention to defects that could easily be detected when the child was young. Children suffering from such nervous jpomplaints as asthma, eczema, and enuresis, often benefited, she said, from regular companionship with children of their own age. Five Canadian girls left Vancouver on Wednesday for New Zealand via San Francisco. Four of them are to marry former airmen stationed here. Their destinations are:—Miss Jean Crosbie, of Dunville, Ontario, Christchurch, to marry Mr lan Rankin, a dress designer; Miss Irene Trent, of Calgary, Alberta, Christchurch, to marry a civil servant, Mr W. Hansen; and Misses Mary Mahoney and Neena McClement, eastern Canada, are travelling to undisclosed destinations. Mrs Doreen Fox is travelling to Auckland to visit parents of her husband, Mr Dene Fox, a pilot in the R.N.Z.A.F., who was shot down over France in 1941 and killed.—(N.Z.P.A.) Hundreds of X stocking coupons will probably be handed over to-day by women shoppers at a Christchurch shop, which has announced that fully fashioned nylon stockings will be released this morning. The stockings are an American brand. Another Christchurch shop has announced that pure silk fully-fashioned stockings will be on sale at the beginning of next week. The lady editor of “The Press” gratefully acknowledges receipt of magazines for patients at the sanatorium from Mrs R. B. Neale, Mrs Edwin Milnes, and Mrs F. S. Scott. The following officers were elected at the thirteenth annual general meeting of the Christchurch Liederkranzchen, held recently:—president, Madame Gower Byrns; vice-presidents, Mesdames J. W.
