SHORTAGE OF TEACHERS
POSITION IN AUCKLAND DISTRICT • (P.A.) AUCKLAND, March 20. Qualified teachers who are not engaged in teaching at present will be invited by advertisements’ to apply for positions on school staffs, and return to the teaching profession in accordance with a resolution passed at a meeting of the Auckland Education Board. In addition, several other measures to alleviate the shortage of teachers, particularly of women teachers, are to be recommended to the Education Department, Wellington. No teachers are available to fill 15 relieving vacancies in the country areas of the board’s district, and 25 extra assistants are required for secondary departments of district *high schools as the result of the annual regrading and improved staffing schedule for district high schools. “The terms are a little more attractive now,” said Mr J. M. McWhannell, “and we may be able to bring back teachers from other callings.” The need for more women teachers was emphasised by a- member of the boad. Hope was expressed that married women teachers would take up appointments.
