WOMEN TRAM CONDUCTORS

AUCKLAND DISPUTE (P.A.) AUCKLAND, The issue of the employment of women as tram conductors .figured largely in the Auckland Tramways dispute before the tribunal appointed by the Minister of Labour (the Hon. A. McLagan). The dispute is still undecided because the tribunal disagreed and ./he decision has been left to the chairman, Mr S. Ritchie, Conciliation Commissioner, who will make an announcement later. For the Tramway Employees Union it was submitted that the Auckland Transport Board desired to retain women to avoid the better conditions which would attract men. The board claimed the right to train women conductors as in the past, and said the union’s refusal of the right of women to join the union was illegal. The union’s reply to this was that the decision came from the national union as a result of a ballot.
