AVERAGES FOR SEASON

J. SMITH TOP OF BATTING ALL-ROUND ABILITY OF J. H. PARKS Of the players who took part in the Canterbury Cricket Association's senior competition this season, none averaged 50 runs an innings, and J. Smith (St. Albans), who headed the averages, was the only one to make more than 500 runs. If figures can be used to assess a batsman’s performances. Smith is in a class of his own this season. Scoring 200 runs more than any other batsman, he has not once carried his bat in a competition match.

The most successful all-rounder has been the Lancaster Park professional, J. H. Parks, who topped the bowling averages. and finished sixth among the batsmen. His team-mate, W. Pollitt, came third in the bowling and fourth in the batting. Pollitt, however, bowled barely a quarter of the overs of most of the clubs' stock bowlers. M. Johnston (West Christchurch) and D. Watson (East Christchurch) took the most catches during the season, holding 13 and 12 respectively. The Canterbury wicket-keeper, A. E. L. Britton, contributed to High School Old Boys’ success in the competition by catching 13 batsmen and stumping nine. The Lancaster Park wicket-keeper, F. R. Davey, stumped nine, and caught nine, and N. H. Buchanan (Old Collegians) caught 16 and stumped two. In the figures given below, the follownig abbreviations for players’ clubs are used:—L.P. (Lancaster Park); E (East Christchurch). St. A. (St. Albans), 0.8. (High School Old Boys), O.C. (Old Collegians). W. (West Christchurch), W. 0.8. (West Old Boys), R. (Riccarton), S. (Sydenham). Players who have averaged more than 30 in at least five innings comprise the list of batsnjen. The best 20 averages of bowlers taking more than nine wickets are given. S. M. Cameron (S.), A. H. Sibley (R.), N. Ainsworth (W. 0.8. and L. Mahoney are the only other bowlers to
