BRITISH DESERTERS IN ITALY
APPEAL BY ALLIED HEADQUARTERS (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, March 15. The Rome correspondent of “The Times” says that Allied Force Headquarters has appealed to British Army deserters, many of whom are “now living by theft and other crimes or on the charity of Italians” to surrender themselves immediately to any British unit or to the military police. The •ppeal emphasises that those who voluntarily surrender by March 31 will receive special consideration when their cases are examined One good reason why they should Surrender immediately the appeal •dds, is that all British Army forces Will soon be withdrawn from Italy, after which such men will find themselves in the position of unwelcome foreigners, subject to capture and. deportation by the Italian authorities. The correspondent says there are believed to be about 400 British deserters in Italy.
