TIMARU CLUB

TROTTING

TO-DAY’S PROSPECTS The Timaru Trotting Club received 37 acceptances for the Claremont Handicap, the opening event at the meeting at Wash--1 dyke to-day, and the race will be run in two divisions. Of the 19 horses in the ! first division, all but four, Jason’s Quest, : Our Nulgie, Silver Volo, and Sandy’s Epic, will start from the' scratch mark. Jason’s j Quest raced well for a win at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting, and he may prove the best of the handicapped horses. Bellisima showed some ability in her races at Wellington, and if she leaves the mark correctly she should take part in the finish. The five-year-old Quite Sure gelding. Mack Sure, has trotted well this season for two second placings, a third placing, and two fourth placings, and he should soon top off this record with a win for S. Easton, who trains him at Oamaru. Beethoven, a winner at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting, is handicapped on the 24 yards mark in the second division. and on his recent form he is a possibility. Doreano, a winner at the matinee meeting at Ashburton this week, should also carry solid support. The field includes some promising trotters in Wairiri Girl, Pat Review, and Harmonist, and they may fight out the finish with Doreano and Beethoven. • Cumnock has come into favour fof the Timaru Trotting Cup, and this Grattan Loyal mare, which is trained by -W. R. Butt, Templeton, is expected to extend the favourites, Final Count and Indigo. Notus, which is now trained at Barbarafield by T. H. Gunning, has improved this season, and he may secure some of the prizemoney from the 24 yards mark.

The Auckland .pacer, British Machine, is the popular choice for the Timaru Nursery Stakes, and he will probably be at a short price. Most opposition to him may come from Mala, Rea Light, and David’s Pride.
