CHINESE CLAIM TO PARACELS

FRENCH LANDING ON ISLAND EXPLANATION SOUGHT BY GOVERNMENT NANKING, January*22. The Chinese Foreign Minister (Mr Wang Shih Cheih) has asked for an explanation of French military activity in the Chinese-administered Paracel Islands, south-east of Hainan, according to the official Chinese Government newspaper, “Central Daily News.” Mr Wang received the French Ambassador three days ago after learning that French troops had landed from a Warship on Patoa Island, which is one of the Paracels. The Ambassador said that the landing was ordered by the French Government. The newspaper quoted a French Embassy source as saying that the sovereignty of the Paracels had not been settled, but France attached little importance to the matter. The French landing was merely for the purpose of learning if Chinese troops were occupying the islands. The Paracels lie 300 miles east of Indo-China. The Chinese occupied the islands after Japan’s surrender. Chinese Government officials say that history and geography support China’s claims to the Paracels.
