MAN DROWNED

FALL FROM RAILWAY BRIDGE (P.A.) AUCKLAND, January 23. A man was drowned and a young woman had a narrow escape from drowning after they fell 60 feet into the Wairoa river from the Pukehui railway bridge. The man was Harold Osborne, aged 32, single, of Avoca, North Auckland. Osborne and Miss Margaret Greenwood, of Palmerston North, had been to a dance and were crossing the bridge, which is on the DargavilleWaiotira branch line, and is about 800 feet long They were about half-way across when they were passed by a jigger carrying men. It is not known whether the jigger struck the couple or whether, in an endeavour to get clear of the track, they missed their footing and fell. Miss Greenwood struck out for the nearest bank about 30 yards away, and on reaching it caught hold of some willows and dragged herself ashore, Osborne’s body has not been recovered.
