TWO CHINESE ASSAULTED
ATTACK BY MASKED MEN MONEY, JEWELLERY, AND GOLD STOLEN (P.A.) AUCKLAND, January 22. Each battered about the head with a rubber hose filled with lead, two Chinese were robbed by two masked men in a house* in Yelverton terrace at midnight last night. The Chinese were robbed of money, gold, and jewellery of a total value of £1154. Both Chinese were admitted to hospital. Their .assailants escaped. The victims of the assault were Charlie Wong Chuck, aged 70, and Fong Hon-, aged 48. a laundryman. The crime cast a gloom over the Chinese community to-day. which is the Chinese New Year. They regard it as a bad omen.
The Chinese were surprised by the intruders and a desperate struggle ensued, Hon using an electric torch as a weapon. Hon was overpowered when he was struck on the head by one of the men while engaged in a struggle with the other intruder.
