WOMEN’S BACKSTROKE RECORD BROKEN The visitors’ gallery at the Christchurch Tepid Baths was crowded last evening for the third night of the Canterbury amateur swimming championships, and keen interest was displayed in all events. Miss E. Bi;itain, of the East Christchurch Swimming Club, broke a record when she won the women’s 100 yards backstroke championship in 78 l-ssec. No other records were broken during the evening. D. Begg, of the Spreydon Club, gave a particularly polished exhibition in the men’s diving championship, which ne won with a total of 112.3 marks, nearly 80 points ahead of the second man The following abbreviations are used in the results below:—E.C., East Christchurch; C.L., Christchurch Ladies; N.B , New Brighton; Som., Somerfield; Lin., Linwood; Elm., Elmwood.
