BULLER COAL OUTPUT

490,364 TONS LAST YEAR The output of coal from Buller district mines during December was the lowest for any month of the year, as the mines did not work for a period of 10 days during the holidays. The total production for the month was 31,879 tons, and of this amount 16.209$ tons were from the Stockton State mine. The Westport Coal Company's mines at Denniston and Millerton produced 8778$ tons, while sundry other mines within the harbour endowment area produced 4673 tons. From other companies outside the endowment area 2218 tons were produced. The export of coal from the port during the month was also the smallest for any month during the year, 22,753 tons being shipped. For the 12 months ended December 31, 1946, the total output from the various mines amounted to 490.364 tons, and of this amount 377,5862 tons were shipped from the port. The timber shipped from the port during the year measured 1,467,605 superficial feet, there being no shipments during December, 1946.

Twelve steamers and one auxiliary vessel, representing 10,157 tons, entered the port, and 15 steamers and one auxiliary vessel, representing 13,807 tons, left the port during the month. Mean high water in the river was 24ft Bin, and on the bar an average depth of 22ft 6in was maintained.
