AMONG THE RAREST IN THE WORLD.—Two of the rarest dogs in the world, owned by Mrs Alexandre Couldrey, of Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex. The breed, known as Maremmanis, is almost extinct, and efforts are being made to preserve the species. Maremmanis, which were formerly bred and used by Italian farmers as mountain sheep dogs, have a strong strain of Polar bear in them, and their fur is intensely thick. Although they will attack and kill wolves, they are friendly and affectionate to their owners. The dogs shown are named Lana and Lancelotto.
