BOY DROWNED IN DAM' BRAVE RESCUE ATTEMPT *• The Press ” Special Service DARGAVILLE, Jan. 21. A schoolboy was drowned in a dam on a property at Rehia yesterday afternoon. He was Rex Raymond Blong, aged 14. son of Mr and Mrs O. A. Blong, of Whenuapai. Courageous efforts to save him were made by a companion, Gordon Stuart Finlayson, aged 14. The accident occurred on the property of Mr W. Finlayson, who was absent from his home. In company with two .of Mr Finlayson’s sons, the boy went swimming in the dam. which is 20 yards wide and 7ft deep at the deepest point. The three had been bathing for about half an hour when Rex Blong suddenly sank about half-w’ay across the dam. Gordon Finlayson immediately swam out and dived. After several attempts he found Blong and brought him tp the bank. He applied artificial respiration for 15 minutes without success.
BOY CRUSHED BY DRAY (P.A.) AUCKLAND, January 22. A 12-year-old boy was killed at Ngongotaha. Rotorua, when the dray he was driving overturned and crushed was Ross Matthew Henderson, the 'eldest son of Mr and Mrs A. M. Henderson, of Ngongotaha.
