OFFER TO PROFESSOR I. A. GORDON

Professor I. A. Gordon, of Wellington, will be offered the post of ViceChancellor of the University of New Zealand. The Senate decided yesterday afternoon that the appointment should be on a part-time basis for one year, and that the position should then be reviewed in the light of developments with the appointment of academic heads of colleges. The present Vice-Chancellor ■ (Sir Thomas Hunter) will retire at the end of February. Professor Gordon has been professor of English language and literature at Victoria University College since 1937. He w s born in Edinburgh in 1903 and

At the Uni- ' versity of Edinburgh he was awarded the Pitt, Dickson travelling, and Scott I travelling scholarships, was a Bruce of 1 Grangehill bursar, Gray essayist, Sloan prizeman, and Elliot prizeman between 1926 and 1934. From 1932 to 1936 he was lecturer in English at the University of Edinburgh and at Heriot Watt College, Edinburgh. He was sub-editor of the “Scottish National Dictionary.”
