SANDERS CUP CONTEST RACES ABANDONED YESTERDAY (P.A.) AUCKLAND. January SI. Auckland was unlucky in two attempt* to sail the second Sanders Cup race to-day. Light variable winds dying away to flat calms caused an abandonment of the morning race, with more than a round to go, when Auckland had a lead of approximately four minutes from Otago, with South Canterbury, Canterbury. Wellington, Wanganui, and North Auckland following. Superior seamanship by Auckland enabled it to take the lead on the first round in a steady sailing breeze. At the second attempt in the afternoon, although flukey conditions prevailed for the second and third rounds of the course, the Auckland boat maintained a lead, but had the mortification of being within three minutes of the finishing line and 20 minutes ahead of North Auckland in second place, when the race was abandoned because of the three-hour limit.
