DRAINAGE BOARD SEEKS LOANS

FIRST WORKS UNDER £330,000 SCHEME CITY SEWERS; SUMNER AND WOOLSTON Decisions to apply to the Local Government Loans Board for loans of £60,000 and £lO,OOO were made by the Christchurch Drainage Board last evening. The £60.000 is to be spent on works in the city and at the sewage farm, described as “the first stage of a scheme of major development and extension of the sewerage system of the metropolitan district.” estimated to cost ultimately £330,000. This scheme involves additional sewage treatment works at the farm, enlargement of the main rising main and pumping stations. There are to be three large relief sewers: (1) to the south and west, to assist Riccarton and provide for industrial and residential development of the Sockburn-Hornby area; (2) to the north, to divert sewage from the overloaded St. Albans area; and (3) to the north-west, to intercept sewers in the Merivale-Fen-dalton area.

The remodelling of the Woolston sewers to incorporate a trade waste scheme, and improvements to the Sumner sewerage system are also among the works proposed under the loan. Reports to the board referred to a steady increase in the loading of the existing sewerage.area system ’‘especially due to the concentration of workers in the city during day-time hours." The extensions were necessary “for the relief of sewers in the sewerage area, especially Merivale." It is proposed to apportion the rate for interest and sinking fund on the £60,000 loan evenly over both the original "inner” sewerage area of the city, and the outer area. The term eff the proposed loan is 35 years, and the interest 31 per cent. The £lO.OOO loan is sought for the reconstruction of Horner’s drain and the Ferry road stormwater sewer outlet. It is to be for 15 years.
