UNIVERSITY PRIZES

AWARDS TO DUNEDIN STUDENTS The following special prizes were awarded by the Senate of the University of New Zealand last evening:— Accountancy prize, J. A. Valentine, Easther crescent, Dunedin. Macmillan Brown prize for an imaginative essay, J. Melser, Bishop street, Dunedin. When it was mentioned that sometimes there was no competition for special prizes, Mr J. H. E. Schroder drew attention to the value of the prizes compared with the amount of work required on an entry. If the university recognised work as worthy of an award, it should also assist in securing its publication, which would be an additional inducement to compete. It was difficult to find a publisher in New Zealand for serious work. When the University Press was properly established it might help.
