OVERTIME AT LYTTELTON

AGREEMENT REACHED AT MEETING Normal hours were resumed on the waterfront at Lyttelton yesterday. In the morning the men were called together and addressed by officials of the union, and it was later announced that the men would accept overtime. There is little shipping in port at present. One overseas vessel and two coastal vessels were involved. TIMARU WATERFRONT NORMAL WORK RESUMED In accordance with instructions received by the Timaru Waterside Workers’ Union from the national council, normal work was resumed on the Timaru waterfront yesterday. The port however, was not busy, the only ship at the wharves being the Fort Rouille, which arrived on Saturday morning from New Plymouth. The Fort Fouille. a 7131-ton vessel, is loading wool and seeds for London and Antwerp, and is listed to sail tomorrow for Port Chalmers. Another overseas ship of the same type, the Fort Nakasley. is expected to arrive from Lyttelton to-morrow. AUCKLAND UNION COUNCIL’S RECOMMENDATION ADOPTED (P.A.) AUCKLAND, January 20. The watersiders, at a special stopwork meeting this morning, adopted the recommendation of the national council of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union deciding to resume overtime work to-night. The meeting lasted an hour and a half. A report on the meeting of th< national council and the conferences with Cabinet last week was given by the national president (Mr H Barnes) and six Auckland delegates. After rescinding the resolutions banning overtime work the meeting authorised overtime pending the outcome of the Waterfront Industry Commission’s consideration of the union’s claims.

When the co-operative, contracting bonus is reintroduced it is believed that it will be effective from the start of work this morning because the check timekeepers, who are members of the watersiders’ union, began keeping records this morning.
