GIFTS REACH VIENNA
Letter of Thanks Received
Hundreds of women in .Canterbury, who knitted tirelessly during the years of war, were gratified at receiving from time to time letters from servicemen acknowledging gifts of woollen comforts, which were sent far and wide, as the necessity for them arose on various fronts. Amongst the most recent acknowledgements is one received from Vienna this week by the LinwoodAvonside Patriotic Association. The letter, dated December 26,; is simply signed “Tom.” The writer is a member of the Z Garrison police Company, stationed in Vienna, and his letter is addressed to Mrs P. C. Browne,, who was convener of a knitting circle attached to the LinwoodAvonside Patriotic Association. With the letter was a photograph of about 75 members of the Vienna Police Company, King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, taken outside the company s headquarters. “Tom” explained that he was sending the photograph as a souvenir to show the men of the company, each of whom the previous day (Christmas Day) had received a knitted sesrf from the Linwood-Avonside Patriotic Association —“a very nice present, for which we would like to thank you, he added. The knitting circle of the association, Mrs Browne says, comprised betweep 20 and 30 members, who met regularly once a week during the six years of war and contributed generously to the supply of woollen goods made for servicemen. The circle has now gone into recess; but it has not disbanded. Its members keep in touch and would be ready to spring into action once more should any emergency arise.
