REFUGEES REACH DARWIN
HWALIEN BRINGS 474 FROM HONG KONG DARWIN, January 15. The former Wellington-Lyttelton steamer express Maori, now renamed Hwahen and flying the Chinese flag, arrived at Darwin last night with 474 European refugees from Hong Kong. Pecause of a shortage of water and fuel supplies, the vessel was forced to make Darwin her first Australian port. She was originally to make Cairns later this week, but she was unable to take on water at Amboina. TJ 1 ® immigrants, most of whom are tradesmen and professional men, paid £lB5 in American dollars for the passage. or more than twice the normal fare. They will disembark at Sydney. Very few intend to take up farming as ap occupation. They comprise a section of more than 2000 European refugees who were stranded in Shanghai by the Pacific war. All have Australian landing permits.
