DAIRY FACTORY DISPUTE
STRIKE DISCUSSED BY AUCKLAND UNION
NO IMMEDIATE ACTION TO BE TAKEN “ The Press ” Special Service
HAMILTON, January 14. A special general meeting of the Auckland Dairy Factory Workers’ Union at Frankton last evening discussed whether an immediate strike should be called as a protest against the existing wages and conditions in the industry. This was decided against by a narrow margin. There was an attendance of 270 delegates, representing between 700 and 800 members of the Auckland branch.
The report of the workers’ assessors on the Conciliation Council which sat m Wellington last week was received, among the speakers being Mr L. D. Robertson, secretary of the branch. It is stated that strong dissatisfaction was expressed with the offer made by the employers. Rates of wages offered were not approved of by the meeting The opinion that direct action should be taken in support of the union’s claims was fairly generally supported, but there was a sharp division as to when direct action should take place. A motion that an immediate strike should be called was narrowly defeated.
