CORNWELL CUP CONTEST
FIRST TWO RACES WON BY AUCKLAND (P.A.) AUCKLAND, January 14. The Auckland crew, comprising T. Miller and W. Katterns, won both the firrt and second Cornwell Cup races on the Waitemata Harbour under good sailing conditions. Christchurch was second in each event, being Imin 6sec astern in the first race, and Imin 20sec in the second. The third race will be sailed at 1.30 p.m. to-morrow over a windward and leeward course. Another win for. the Auckland crew will end the contest. The first race was sailed this morning in a freshening south-easterly breeze over , a windward and leeward course. Auckland led throughout, with Hamilton, Christchurch and Akaroa pressing closely all the way. The second race was held over a triangular course in a light to freshening easterly- breeze. Otago lost time at the start, its spinnaker gear going overboard. Christchurch led Auckland at the end of the first round, with Paremata, Akaroa. and Lyttelton following. Auckland took the lead in the next round, with Akaroa more than three minutef astern in third place. Paremata capsized, but was quickly righted by the crew, and continued in thfc race. Pare- , mate again capsized on the run and was towed home. Wanganui also capsized, but was righted. Hamilton broke her mast and Plimmerton carried away her spinnaker boom. Auckland won by Imin 20sec from Christchurch, with Akaroa three minuteS further .back. Lyttelton, was fourth.
SANDERS CUP CONTEST
CANTERBURY BOAT ARRIVES, AT AUCKLAND <<3 (P.A.) AUCKLAND. Jan 14. Carrying the Canterbury representative boat Venus for the 1947 Sanders Cup* coxitest, to be held on Monday, the fistuna boat, Tawera. arrived from Lyttelton tMI 1 morning with the yacht’s skipper (G. Brasell) and two of the crew.
